O'Neil, who was still in high school years during the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performance. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. She suffered major defeats in the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, followed by the in the bottom two. Judges were amazed at her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
